Lyft in Mexico: Current Status and Future Expansion Prospects

"Lyft logo displayed against a simple background, symbolizing its anticipated expansion into the Mexican ride-sharing market."

Introduction to Lyft Mexico

Lyft, one of the most extensive rideshare services, operates in over 600 cities across America and Canada, reaching 95% of the population. Consequently, you might assume that Lyft Mexico is a given. However, I regret to inform you that Lyft has not yet expanded its services to Mexico.

While Lyft’s expansion plans include Mexico, keep in mind that Lyft, though substantial, is outpaced by Uber’s global reach. Additionally, the local taxis, or “taxis mexicanos,” aren’t particularly welcoming to newcomers in the ride-hailing industry.

Lyft’s services, as mentioned earlier, are currently only available within the United States and Canada. The user-friendly nature of their app is what sets them apart and appeals to many customers, often becoming a deciding factor for those choosing between Lyft and Uber.

Despite extensive research, I could not pinpoint an exact date for Lyft’s rollout to countries south of the US, including Mexico. Therefore, if you’re hoping for a Lyft pickup at Mexico City airport, you might be in for a long wait. Let’s move on to the next rideshare option on our list while we wait for further updates from Lyft.

Do They Have Uber In Mexico?

"Uber car waiting for passengers in the bustling streets of Mexico City."

Introduction to Uber MX

The super short answer is yes, Uber is in Mexico, and believe it or not they are in more than 60 cities in Mexico. They started in MX back in the heyday of their company, all the way back in 2013 and have been growing ever since. To the dismay of the taxi in Mexico. We will go more into that later!

Where In Mexico Is Uber

Now Uber is in Mexico in all the places that matter. So you will be able to find a ride almost anywhere you go, as long as it not too far off the beaten path. So long as you are in the main cities, you’re pretty much guaranteed to find an Uber in Mexico. These include cities like Mexico City and many more.

Check out the map down below. If your destination is taking you somewhere other than what is marked on the map, you may need to do some research on whether Uber is going to get you there.

Now back to going off of the beaten path, you may have a hard time finding an Uber in smaller cities due to the taxi industry pushing back on all the ride-share apps out there. This is because it is making it harder for the local taxis to stay in business, similar to the issues faced/still facing in cities in the USA.

What Its Like Using Uber MX

Uber is responsible for bringing a touch of modern to Mexico, making it easy and convent to get around without the need to try to hail a taxi. Just grab your phone and order an Uber, and you are off to your destination.

Normal Uber rides around Mexico City can take anywhere from 10-15mins, other areas may take longer. I can’t say that I have ever had any issues other than maybe some traffic, which is to be expected in the largest city on earth *Mexico City.

One of the best things about them is the fact that they are cashless, just like in the US and Canada, making it possible to get a ride even after you spent all of your cash.

In the day or the night, you should still be able to find an Uber. Since they are 24hrs and have very few restrictions on them currently. Meaning Airports are not off limits, which is something that can’t even be said about the USA.

Is Uber In Mexico city Safe Or Mexico As A whole?

There are still some parts of Mexico that one should AVOID. This could be for a couple of reasons 1 is that the service is not available in the area or 2 and probably the most import is the areas that Uber is not well received!

There are some parts of the country, where local transportation authorities and/or the taxi unions don’t like the new competition. This has lead to forceful protests or flat out blocking of the services from operating.

While laws have been passes in January 2023 that lets Uber operate in regions of México, it still remains dangerous to rideshare services, let alone just Uber.

All of that being said, in most cases I tend to feel safer in an Uber. It’s always a little strange being in someone else’s car, let alone a stranger from another country, But just as in the states, Uber drivers are held to the standard of the people that they drive for.

If Uber drivers had a nasty experience for their. Clients, then chances are that you would see it on their reviews. This is more than can be said about a random taxi. Now, that doesn’t mean all taxis are bad, but we will get into that later.

There is another side note and that is that Uber drivers are tracked by GPS and Uber knows where the driver is at all times.

Being in a new place not knowing where the good or bad areas are can lead to some risk which is why we always travel with insurance! Travelex Insurance

The Places To Keep In Your Mind For Danger

When using ride-shares keep an eye out for the entire Riviera Maya region of Mexico this includes Cozumel, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and can’t forget about Cancun. So is Uber in Mexico Cancun yes it is but not safe to use.

In cases like this, it can be better to rent your own form of transportation.

Like I was saying earlier, Taxi in Mexico have never been in favor of the foreign competition. This has led to several reports of violence against Uber drivers and their passengers.

This to me can be from several factors. It is never nice having a new company trying to strong-arm their way into a local market, this can disrupt locals livelihoods. There are also some other nefarious groups that may have vested interest in the transpiration industry.

Now, though I do NOT recommend using Uber in these areas for ride-sharing in general, But I have been able to use them successfully, and I’m still here. It helps to be fluent in Spanish. This is the pocket translators I used until I learned Spanish. Still that being said Uber is not well liked in some parts of México still and while on your journeys air on the side of caution even if the app works.

There are also some places in México where Uber is available, but is considered as illegal or at least technically not legal, a kind of gray area. An example of this is Cabo San Lucas in Baja Cali
